All field biology projects conducted by UAA, whether for research or teaching purposes and regardless of funding source, must be reviewed and approved by the UAA Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. There are no exemptions to the review process.

Objective: After completing module 1 you should be familiar with the basic requirements and expectations for the use of live vertebrates in a research or teaching environment. The primary objective for module 5 is to become familiar with the field research guidelines. As a component of this, you will learn that the use of free-ranging animals, like captive wildlife and laboratory animals, requires sound scientific justification and is subject to the 3 R's (reduction, refinement and replacement).

Instructions: Completion of this module is required prior to conducting or participating in research or teaching protocols on free-ranging vertebrates. You may specialize on fishes, reptiles/amphibians, birds, or mammals depending upon your specific needs. There are 4 quizzes with 25 questions each. Necessary information to pass the quizzes is available in the respective field research guidelines linked below or was previously covered in module 1. Another useful site for information on field biology is the Frequently Asked Questions section of the IACUC web site. As with the other modules, you may print off the quiz and use it as a study guide. You must get 100% to successfully complete the specific quiz.
