Oxidizing Agents

Chemicals releasing nascent oxygen are useful germicidal compounds. Nascent oxygen combines rapidly with all organic matter and is rendered inactive.

Hydrogen Peroxide Solution, USP

A colorless aqueous solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide. It liberates oxygen readily but the process is very rapid when the solution is in contact with mucous membranes or denuded surfaces that provide the enzyme catalase. This product is weakly germicidal but its effervescent activity in the recesses of a wound may be beneficial to mechanically remove pus and cellular debris. There are better antiseptics available!
